Are you training to progressively improve? Do you walk into the gym with a game plan? If you have a trainer are they purposefully making you better? If so then you are training. If you are doing random workouts/exercises and don't follow a plan to get better then you are just working out. Even if you go hard, drip with sweat, nearly collapse and are sore for days, you may just be working out.

Stop spinning your wheels and start training. Set specific goals for your time in the gym. Training can be broken down into the individual session, the training week, the month, year and even multiple years. Olympians normally organize their training into Olympic cycles, or 4 years. The generalist doesn't need to take it to that level but looking at 4-8 weeks is very reasonable and beneficial.

You are much better served to train purposefully 3 times a week than randomly working out every day. The specific training program depends on the individual, their experience level, injuries and goals.
